Vintage Rolex Explorer II Black Dial Watch, Pre-Millennium (initial) Edition from 1998.
One of the first professional line models manufactured by Rolex (between April 1997 and 2011) under the designation Explorer II Black Superluminova. It features a round 904L stainless steel case with a 40 mm diameter and an 11 mm thickness.
A vintage timepiece designed for frequent travelers and those working across multiple time zones. No matter where you are, the Rolex Explorer II can display the local time in day/night mode, as well as your reference or destination time, thanks to its two independently adjustable hour hands — one of them distinguished by a small red arrow.
Equipped with a 31-jewel, chronometer-certified Caliber 3185 GMT movement, this self-winding watch displays the date (with a quickset function). Its specific and antimagnetic steel ensures constant reliability regardless of the environment. Developed as an evolution of Rolex's 3135 movement, it features a balance wheel capable of absorbing shocks. With a screw-down case back and crown, the watch is certified water-resistant up to 100 meters.
The elegant, highly legible dial allows dual-time reading in both 12-hour and 24-hour formats, with the red GMT hand rotating once every 24 hours and readable against the fixed bezel’s graduations. The GMT hand can be independently and quickly adjusted to set or change time zones as needed. The sapphire crystal is scratch-resistant and features a cyclops lens over the date. The comfortable bracelet is crafted from 904L stainless steel.
As one of Rolex’s great classics, the Explorer II allows users to display two time zones without the need for a visual reference to distinguish between day and night — a particularly useful feature for international business travelers to avoid calling their contacts in the middle of the night. With its clean and elegant lines, the Explorer II suits refined, upscale environments perfectly. Its sturdy and compact case, combined with a fixed bezel integrated into the body, avoids the protruding edges found on rotating bezels like those of the Rolex Submariner, minimizing the risk of scratching delicate surfaces.
The screw-down Triplock winding crown is protected by a crown guard integrated into the case. The automatic movement offers a 50-hour power reserve when fully wound. Furthermore, the adjustable bracelet, which can be fine-tuned by adding or removing links and features an extensible folding clasp, allows flexible usage.
Its 40 mm case size and compact thickness make it perfect for all wrist sizes and discreet enough to slip under a shirt cuff, enhancing security while traveling.
